·
Plastic knife to carve into the clay
·
Newspaper to set the clay on (less of a mess)
Any resources that
helped inspire this project: Use
lots of images of hieroglyphics to show your students, use pictures of Egypt’s
scenery and the pyramids and art that
surrounds them to get them inspired to make their own Egyptian art, and to be
proud of their name in hieroglyphics.
List the subjects that your lesson ties in with: history, architecture, and ancient art and language
Step-by-step with
text and photos
·
Hand out the list of hieroglyphics and English alphabet
to all the students
·
Begin with construction paper, light enough
colors to see sharpie
·
Take your piece of paper and fold in in half hot dog style so the student
can see the room they have for their 1st and last name
·
Have them write their first and last name in hieroglyphics, in pencil
first!
·
Have the students trace their names with sharpie (I included different
colors so they could see what colors they would want to work with)
·
Erase all stray pencil marks
·
Display around the room for all kids to see
Now for the messy part!!
·
Begin by laying down newspaper over the desks to prevent too much of a
mess
·
You will need 1 cup of flower
·
½ cup of salt
·
½ cup of water
·
A mixing bowl
·
Roll up your sleeves and start mixing everything together in the bowl
·
Have your students take out the clay and gently pat it out flat and thick
so they can carve in it (I did this in my dorm room so I kept it inside the
bowl)
·
After it is patted out, have them use a plastic knife to carve out the
first letter of their names in hieroglyphics.
·
Let dry about 12 – 24 hours turning over about half way through
·
Display in class for everyone to see or let students take home to display
in their room!
Extra tips for
problem-solving: After doing this project I noticed 2 things that I needed
to change, #1 use more than ½ cup of water, I needed to keep adding it little
by little until the play dough got to the consistency I wanted. #2 the play
dough cracks easily! So make sure to handle it little as possible until it is
completely dry.
Art Vocabulary:
Art Vocabulary:
1. Texture (play dough / clay)
2. Line (drawing the hieroglyphics)
3. Balance (putting the hieroglyphics on the clay)
